FILMMAKER & DIRECTOR

Katharina has worked as a freelance editor for major Dutch broadcasters for over twenty years, specialising in investigative, historical and human-interest documentaries. Born in Poland and raised in Germany, she moved to the Netherlands to study, eventually building her life and career there.

Her work as an editor has taught her that the most powerful stories unfold gradually, place people at their heart and reveal what they carry within them.

Who the f*** is C. Barton? is her first feature-length documentary, which she directed, produced and edited.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

”As an amateur photographer, I was first drawn to his images. I wanted to understand how Barton saw the world: how he got so close to his subjects, and what he noticed that others missed.

For more than sixty years, he captured the great names and historic moments of his time, in the Netherlands and far beyond. I delved into his archive and spoke with people he photographed and with whom he worked closely for many years. I also followed him as he went out with his camera, because even past eighty, Barton is unstoppable.

But the more I discovered about his work, the more I wondered who the man behind the camera was. All his life he turned his gaze on others, while seeming to want to remain unseen himself. That contradiction moved me, and gradually I understood why. As a teenager, Barton fled apartheid-era South Africa, the country where he grew up, alone. As a child, I left communist Poland. Our stories are not the same, but I recognised something in his experience: what it means to leave your homeland behind, to start over somewhere else, and to find your place in a world that does not yet feel like home.

That recognition brought us closer. In this film, I wanted not only to show his work, but to discover who he is: his memories, his choices, his relationships, the things he speaks about easily and the things for which words are harder to find.

The trust this required grew slowly, through many conversations, often without a camera. I did not want to tell his story for him, but to create the space in which he could tell it himself. While he looked back on his life’s work in the Netherlands, I travelled to Johannesburg. There I met his sister and a childhood friend, the only people who still know him from before he left. Their memories filled in what he himself, after a lifetime of secrecy, began to tell me.

For me, Who the f*** is C. Barton? is therefore about more than an iconic photographer. It is a film about what we carry with us from the past, about starting over, and about the courage to find yourself again. About a man who, after a lifetime of capturing others, finally lets himself be seen.”

BEHIND THE FILM

What began as a film about a photographer grew into a personal search for the man behind an extensive photographic archive.

For the documentary, Katharina followed Barton in the Netherlands and immersed herself in the people, places and memories that shaped his life. Eventually, that search took her to Johannesburg. Barton himself did not return. Katharina travelled to South Africa without him, into the world of his youth, where she spoke with people who are part of his history.

The result is a film in which past and present continually meet and in which the photographer who spent his life observing others gradually becomes the subject himself.
